Metabolic water

The water which is created in our body through metabolism by oxidation of energy containing compounds like carbohydrates, proteins and fats are called metabolic water. Here the type of metabolism involved are catabolism in which complex molecules are broken down to release their stored energy, with water as a by product.

Animal metabolism produces about 110 grams of water per 100 grams of fat, 42 grams of water per 100 grams of protein and 60 grams of water per 100 grams of carbohydrates.

Metabolism of Carbohydrates

C6H12O6 + 6O26CO2 + 6H2O + 36ATP

Metabolism of Fats

C17H35COOH + 26O218CO2 + 18H20

Humans obtain only about 8-10% of water through metabloism. In contrast xerocoles animals, living in deserts like Camels, Kangaroo rat, etc survive on metabolic water.

Meanings

1. Metabolism: The chemical reaction in the body cells that converts energy containing compounds like carbohydrates, proteins and fats from food into energy.

2. Catabolism: The breakdown of complex molecules in living organism to form simple one.

3. Xerocoles: Animals which are adapted to live in deserts.
